Teterboro, White Plains or Morristown: picking the right field

New York has four main airports for private jets. The best one is rarely about the airport itself. It is about where your car starts, the time of day and, now and then, the aircraft.

Midtown and Lower Manhattan seen from above the East River

Ask ten New Yorkers who fly privately which airport they use and most will say Teterboro. Plenty of the others will say White Plains, and a few will swear by Morristown or Republic. They are all right, for their own address. Choosing well can save the better part of an hour on the road, which on a short trip is a large share of the total journey.

The four fields

Approximate road distances from Midtown; times depend on traffic
FieldWhereTo MidtownWorth knowing
TEB TeterboroBergen County, NJ~12 miNo airlines; customs on the field; aircraft weight limit
HPN Westchester CountyWhite Plains, NY~33 miShared with airline flights; customs on the field; overnight quiet hours
MMU MorristownMorris County, NJ~30 miBusiness-aviation focused; confirm customs with the operator
FRG RepublicFarmingdale, Long Island~33 miConvenient for Nassau and Suffolk; confirm customs with the operator

Start with where the car starts

Distance on a map is only half of it. What matters is the road between your door and the FBO, and how busy it is when you travel.

Manhattan

From Midtown, the West Side and Downtown, Teterboro is almost always the answer. The Lincoln Tunnel, the Holland Tunnel and the George Washington Bridge all lead to it, and the drive is short outside rush hour. From the Upper East Side it is still usually Teterboro over the bridge, although Westchester becomes competitive when traffic is heading north rather than west.

Westchester and Connecticut

From Westchester, Greenwich or anywhere in Fairfield County, Westchester County Airport in White Plains is the natural choice. Driving to Teterboro would mean crossing the Hudson for no reason.

New Jersey

From Bergen County, Teterboro is on your doorstep. From Morris, Somerset or Essex County, Morristown is usually closer and avoids the busiest roads around the Meadowlands.

Long Island and Brooklyn

From Nassau or Suffolk County, Republic Airport in Farmingdale avoids the city crossings entirely. From Brooklyn it is a closer call between Republic and Teterboro, and the traffic on the day usually decides.

The other factors

Customs

For international trips, check where customs is available and when. Teterboro and Westchester both have customs facilities for private flights, with limited hours that must be arranged in advance. At Morristown and Republic, confirm the current arrangements with the operator before you plan around them. A late-night arrival from Europe may need to land wherever officers are on duty.

Aircraft size and weight

Teterboro limits aircraft weight. Light, midsize, super-midsize and most large-cabin jets are unaffected; the heaviest long-range aircraft can need extra planning on very long trips. Westchester handles every business jet, which is one reason some ultra long range flights use it.

Quiet hours

Westchester asks operators to avoid flying overnight, and Teterboro has noise rules that discourage late-night operations. If you need to leave at midnight, say so in the request; your advisor will plan around the rules or suggest the field that suits.

Airline traffic

Westchester shares its runways with airline flights, while Teterboro, Morristown and Republic are private and general aviation airports. In practice private passengers use separate terminals everywhere, so the difference is small, but ground traffic around Westchester's airline terminal can be busier on holiday weekends.

Timing the drive

Rush hours on the Hudson crossings are the obvious trap, but there are others. Friday afternoons in summer send traffic north and east toward the beaches and the mountains. Holiday weekends start early. Game days and concerts at MetLife Stadium, a few miles from Teterboro, can clog the roads around the airport. If your departure falls at one of these times, it can be worth choosing a different field, or a different hour, to avoid them.

You can leave from one field and return to another

Departure and arrival airports do not have to match. A family leaving from Teterboro on a Thursday evening might prefer to land at Westchester on Sunday night if they are heading to Connecticut afterwards. Operators can do this, although moving the aircraft between fields may add a short positioning flight to the quote. Tell us where you are going after you land, not just where you start.

Car or helicopter

For Manhattan travelers in a hurry, a short helicopter flight from a city heliport to Teterboro skips the river crossings altogether. It costs more than a car and depends on the weather, but on a Friday afternoon it can be the difference between making a dinner and missing it. Ask when you request a quote and we will arrange it through a helicopter operator.

Price and availability

The field you choose can change the quote. If the aircraft is based at Teterboro and you leave from Morristown, the operator has to position it first, which adds time and cost. Equally, an aircraft based at Westchester can make White Plains the better-value choice even from Manhattan. That is why we ask where you are starting, rather than assuming Teterboro, and show you the difference when it is material.

What stays the same everywhere

Whichever field you choose, the essentials do not change. The operator holds the same certificate, the crew follows the same rules, and the aircraft is the same aircraft. The private terminals differ in size and style, but each one offers the same short walk from the car to the stairs. The decision is about convenience, not about standards.

A rule of thumb

  • Manhattan and Bergen County: Teterboro.
  • Westchester and Connecticut: Westchester County, White Plains.
  • Morris, Somerset and Essex counties: Morristown.
  • Long Island: Republic, Farmingdale.
  • Ultra long range on a very long trip: ask us; the weight limit may point to Westchester.

Rules of thumb have exceptions: a Friday-afternoon crossing, a road closure, an aircraft parked at the other field. Tell us where you are starting and when, and we will quote from the field that gets you to the aircraft fastest.
